Stand off at Waco lasts 51 days

Janet Reno first female Attorney General

Kellee Booth

Kellee Booth, of Cota de Caza, Calif., had tried to win the U.S. Girls' Junior four times before. But this time, at Mesa Verde (Calif.) Country Club, she got what she was after.

Once before she had reached the semifinals. But this time she went all the way. She defeated Peru's Erika Hayashida, 1-up, in a stirring final match decided on the 18th hole. There, a 20-foot chip from the fringe for her only birdie of the round gave Kellee a win.

"At last, a USGA trophy in our family!" she said after the match. It was a comment that could only come from someone who had grown up with The USGA. Her mother, Jane, is a long-time USGA committee member.

Booth shot 146 to qualify, five behind the medalist, 15-year-old Christie Kerr, of Miami, Fla. She never was in trouble during her first five matches, but twice trailed Hayashida by one hole.

Booth went 1 up on 17 when Hayashida bogeyed, and then watched in horror as her opponent's tee shot on 18, a par 3, almost was holed. But it rolled seven feet past the cup, and Booth closed out the match with her birdie, then conceded a birdie to Hayashida as well.
