Dana Lofland

Dana Lofland, 17, of Oxnard, California, defeated Amy Fruhwirth of Cypress, California, 4 and 3, to win the Girls' Junior Championship at St. Clair Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Lofland thus became the fourth golfer to win the qualifying medal and the Championship, and the third successive Californian to win the Championship.

Kim Saiki of Westminster and Cathy Mockett of Newport Beach won in 1983 and 1984, respectively. Only one of Fruhwirth's matches went to the final hole. That occurred in her semifinal match with Christy Erb of Bonita, California, which she won, 1 up.

Lofland had a more difficult road to the final, twice winning on the final green and once on the 19th hole. She defeated Tracy Nakamura of Monterey Park, California, 3 and 2, in her semifinal match. The final match was all square through 10 holes.

Lofland won the 11th with a birdie and the 12th and 13th with pars to go 3 up. The 14th was halved with pars and Lofland won the match on the par-3 15th when Fruhwirth three-putted from 45 feet. The USGA accepted 114 entries for the Championship.
