Cathy Mockett

Cathy Mockett, 16, of Newport Beach, California, defeated Michika Hattori, of Aichigun, Japan, 1 up, in the final played at he Mill Creek Country Club, in Bothell, Washington. Not only was Miss Mockett the third player to become medalist and champion, but she was also the second successive Californian to win.

Kim Saiki, of Westminster, California, had won the 1983 Girls' Junior. Miss Hattori, who is 15, disposed of five opponents without playing the 18th hole. Miss Mockett also had a relatively smooth path to the final, playing the 18th hole just once.

In the final, the first nine belonged to Miss Mockett who was one-under par and 2 up, but Miss Hattori strung together successive pars on holes 10 through 14 and Miss Mockett's lead disappeared. Miss Mockett won the 15th when Miss Hattori three-putted, but Miss Hattori won the 16th when Miss Mockett bunkered her approach. Miss Mockett missed a two-foot putt for a par that would have won the 17th hole, but on the 18th, she holed one of the same length for a bogey to win the match.
