Kim Saiki

Kim Saiki, 17, of Westminster, California, won the Girls' Junior Championship by defeating Buffy Klein, of Argyle, Texas, 2 and 1, at the Somerset Hills Country Club, in Bernardsville, New Jersey. Somerset Hills, which had been the host club in 1973, thus became the first club to hold two Girls' Junior Championships.

Miss Saiki qualified for match play with 152, and in the semifinal defeated Kay Cornelius, of Phoenix, Arizona, the 1981 Champion, 1 up in 19 holes. Miss Saiki was 3 down against Miss Cornelius, but she squared the match by the 16th and holed a 20-foot birdie putt to win on the first extra hole. Miss Klein was not expected to reach the final, having qualified with 170, 20 strokes behind Melissa McNamara, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the medalist.

In the semifinals, Miss Klein defeated Miss McNamara, who was medalist for the second consecutive year, 2 and 1. Miss Saiki won the first hole of the final match, but Miss Klein won three of the next four to take a 2-up lead. Miss Saiki fought back and closed out the match on the 17th. The Girls' Junior attracted 165 entries.
