Heather Farr, 17, of Phoenix, Arizona, won the Girls' Junior Championship in her fourth and final try, defeating Caroline Keggi, 17, of Middlebury, Connecticut, 2 and 1 in the final match. The Championship was played at the Greeley Country Club, in Greeley, Colorado. It was a week of record-breaking golf, beginning with two days of stroke-play qualifying for match play.
Kathy McCarthy, of Fresno, California, scored two consecutive eagles in shooting a record 69, four under par, in the first round. On the second day, Melissa McNamara, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, equaled the 69, which, added to her opening 72, gave her the 36-hole qualifying record of 141, five under par one stroke better than the record set by Amy Benz, in 1979.
Miss McCarthy qualified second with a 76 for 145, one under par. Miss Farr, who qualified with 153, reached the final match by defeating Janet Soulsby, of Prudhoe, England, in a 19-hole semifinal match. Miss Soulsby, a member of the 1982 British Curtis Cup Team, was the first British Curtis Cupper to compete in the U.S. Girls' Junior.
In the final match, Miss Keggi took an early 1-up lead with a par 3 at the second hole. Miss Farr pulled even with a birdie at the par-5 fourth hole. When Miss Keggi took three putts at both the fifth and sixth holes, Miss Farr was able to recover from errant drives to halve both holes. Miss Farr assumed a 2-up lead after the ninth, but she lost the 10th to Miss Keggi's par 3. She recovered her 2-up advantage when she parred the 12th. Miss Keggi won the 13th, but Miss Farr won the 14th with a bogey and the 15th with a birdie to go dormie three.
The match ended at the 17th hole when they halved with birdies. Miss Keggi narrowly missed an eagle putt from 12 feet after Farr chipped her third shot to within one foot of the hole. The USGA accepted 167 entries, short of the record 176 received in 1976. |
