Althea Tome
Two 17-year-olds met at the Guyan Golf and Country Club, in Huntington, W. Va., and Miss Althea Tome, of Honolulu, defeated Miss Melissa McGeorge, of Richardson, Texas, 3 and 2, in the final round. Miss Tome was the first Hawaiian to win the Girls' Junior.
Neither girl was able to take more than a one hole advantage until the 13th, where Miss Tome won to go 2 up. She then won the 14th hole with the only birdie of the match. The match ended after both the 15th and 16th holes were halved.
Miss Mary Murphy, of Naples, Fla., led the qualifying round with 144, even par. This equaled the record set by Miss Nancy Lopez in 1973. Miss Murphy took Miss Tome to the 19th hole in the second round. Miss Tome also went 19 holes in her semi-final round in defeating Miss LuLong Harley, of Oceanside, Calif. Miss McGeorge defeated Miss Kim Bauer, of Conroe, Texas, 3 and 2, in her semi-final match. At 5,777 yards, Guyan became the shortest course to entertain the Championship. |
