Miss Eller, now 17, became the first Champion to repeat in a USGA junior event by defeating Miss Sherry Wheeler, 17, of Glasgow, Ky., 1 up, at the Greenwich Country Club, Greenwich, Conn. In the semi-final, Miss Wheeler had needed only four pars for a 68 after defeating Miss Joyce Denson, 17, of Atlanta, Ga., and she played out the bye holes to make a 70.
Miss Connie Robinson, 17, of Pasadena, Calif., was medalist with 78, six over par. The youngest qualifier was Miss Mimi Grandle, 13, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who scored 91 and earned a place in a one-hole playoff. There was a record entry of 84 and a starting field of 77, representing 24 states. Mrs. Glenna Collett Vare, of Philadelphia, six times Women's Amateur Champion and donor of the trophy, refereed the final and presented the prize. The Round Hill Club entertained 25 first round losers in a consolation which was won by Miss Judy Hoetmer, of Seattle, Wash., with a 75. |
