Two young ladies from the Pacific Northwest came together in the final at the Florence (S.C.) Country Club, in August, 1955. Miss Carole Jo Kabler, 17, of Sutherlin, Ore., made four birdies in 15 holes and defeated Miss JoAnne Gunderson, 16, of Kirkland, Wash., 4 and 3. Miss Kabler was the Oregon Women's Champion. Another Pacific Northwest player, Miss Anne Quast, 17, of Everett, Wash., was defeated in the semi-finals, along with Miss Betsy Cullen, 16, of Tulsa, Okla. The entry reached 72 and set a new record.
However, an all-match -play form was being tried for the first time, and this caused an unusually large number of withdrawals. Thus only 57 started, as against 59 the previous year. These players represented 24 states, the District of Columbia and Mexico. The youngest was Sharon Klump, of Toledo, Ohio, who had turned 11 the previous March. The smallest was Sandra Haynie, 12, of Midland, Texas, who stood 4 feet 6 inches and weighed 66 pounds. Miss Wiffi Smith was too old to defend. |
