Miss Margaret (Wiffi) Smith, of Guadalajara, Mexico, the Mexican Champion and a semi-finalist in the 1953 Women's Amateur Championship, defeated Miss Sue Driscoll, of Normandy, Mo., 5 and 4, at the Gulph Mills Golf Club, near Philadelphia, in August-September. Both were 17. There was a large entry of 64 girls, 59 of whom started. Miss Ruth Jessen, of Seattle, Wash., the Pacific Northwest Champion, set a qualifying record of 75, and there was a tie at 85 for the last of the 16 places in match play, also a new low. Miss Mildred Meyerson, the Champion, failed to qualify by four strokes, and Miss Holly Jean Roth, runnerup to her, failed by five. |
