Three
Players Share Medalist Honors At 2004 Girls' Junior
Fort
Worth, Texas – Three players shared medalist honors after
the second round of stroke play at the 56th U.S. Girls' Junior,
being played at the 6,256-yard, par-71 Mira Vista Golf Club
course.
Two
of the first-round co-leaders, 17-year-old Julieta Granada
of Paraguay, and Mari Chun, 16, of Pearl City, Hawaii, joined
past champion In-Bee Park, 16, of Henderson, Nev., with 4-under-par
138s. The 138 tally was the third-lowest score by a medalist
in Girls' Junior history.
It
also marked the third consecutive year that Park, the 2002
winner and playing in her fourth Girls' Junior, finished as
a medalist. In the 56-year history of the championship, only
one other player accomplished the feat – Brandie Burton from
1987-89.
“I
feel very honored to do it,” said Park, who carded a 4-under
67 in the second round. “I didn't expect to be a medalist
because I didn't play well [Monday].”
After
a bogey on No. 2, Park made three consecutive 10-foot birdie
putts on the third, fourth and fifth holes. After back-to-back
birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, she missed a 7-foot birdie
putt on the par-4, 337-yard 18th hole that would have given
her the outright lead.
An
anomaly, there was no playoff for the first time since 1998.
Granada,
competing in her fifth Girls' Junior, played Tuesday as though
she were on cruise control. Starting in the hazy and breezy
afternoon when temperatures topped out at 97 degrees, Granada
said she “felt like going to sleep” during her even-par day.
Baked
fairways and greens might have been indicative of higher scores
Tuesday. Only six players shot under par in the second round.
“I
don't think the course played different [from Monday],” said
Granada. “I was playing different. I played more conservative.”
She
held it together to register three birdies, one of which was
a 50-foot whopper.
On
the 130-yard, par-3 seventh, Granada used an 8-iron to drive
the ball far right of the hole. But she knocked in the long
putt to shock herself.
“If
it didn't go in, it was going in the water,” said Granada,
who last year lost to 17-year-old Paula Creamer of Pleasanton,
Calif., in the quarterfinals. “I was like, ‘OK, I hit that
one!'”
Incidentally,
Creamer finished with the fourth seed after Tuesday's 1-under
70 and two-day total of 2-under 140.
Chun
started erratically, carding a 3-over 38 on the front nine
thanks to four bogeys. But five birdies on the back, despite
a double bogey on the 18 th hole, bolstered her round.
She
made a concerted effort not to think about medalist honors.
“I
was just trying to play my best and after the front nine I
was like, ‘Wow, I have a lot of work to do,'" said Chun,
playing in her first Girls' Junior. “But I'm pretty happy
that I was able to come back, and I didn't let myself falter
some more.”
Faltering
were the other first-round co-leaders, defending champion
Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff, 17, of Toms River, N.J., and 16-year-old
Jennie Arseneault of Grinnell, Iowa.
Arseneault,
firing a 3-over 74 for a two-day 141 total, had trouble with
the putter.
“I
had a little more trouble on the greens in getting the distances
down,” she said.
Wuesthoff
is attempting to become the third player in Girls' Junior
history to defend a title, trying to follow in the footsteps
of Hollis Stacy (1969-71) and Judy Eller, who won in 1957-58.
After posting a 4-over 75 and two-day score of 142, she said
her troubles evolved from figuring out the faster greens and
drier fairways.
“It's
crazy,” she said of the heat.
The
first and second rounds of match play at the 2004 U.S. Girls'
Junior are scheduled for Wednesday, the third and quarterfinal
rounds will be played Thursday, the semifinal matches are
on Friday, and the 18-hole championship final is scheduled
for Saturday.
The U.S. Girls' Junior is one of 13 national championships
for individuals conducted annually by the United States Golf
Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
