Medalist Advances, Defending Champion Ousted at 2004 U.S. Girls' Junior

Fort Worth, Texas – Julieta Granada, 17, of Paraguay, the last remaining medalist in the field, easily advanced while defending champion Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff, 17, of Toms River, N.J., was eliminated in the third round Thursday at the 56th U.S. Girls' Junior at the 6,256-yard, par-71 Mira Vista Golf Club.

Granada won eight of the first nine holes against Sooji Cho, 16, of Glendale, Calif., and cruised to an 8-and-7 victory. It is the second consecutive quarterfinals appearance for Granada.

“Today I was striking it really solid,” Granada said. “I don't think I missed a fairway or a green, and my putting was awesome. So I pretty much got the whole thing going this morning.”

The quick finish was a blessing for Granada given Fort Worth's high temperatures, which have been in the high 90s all week.

“It really helps me because I can go in and rest a little bit for the next match, to get my mindset ready,” she said.

Granada's quarterfinal opponent will be 14-year-old Esther Choe of La Quinta, Calif. Choe, a 5-and-3 winner over Jennie Lee, 17, of Huntington Beach, Calif., was also a 2003 quarterfinalist.

Meanwhile, Wuesthoff's hopes of becoming just the third person in Girls' Junior history to repeat were ended by 14-year-old Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., 5 and 4.

“I'm not disappointed as much because I tried my best,” said Wuesthoff, who was trying to join Judy Eller (1957-58) and Hollis Stacy (1969-71) as those to successfully defend. “Some days things don't work out. Today was one of those days.”

Harigae, who lost a 2-up match to Wuesthoff in the 2003 semifinals, will next face Lu Hsiao-Ching, 16, of Chinese Taipei, a 1-up winner over Marika Lendl, 16, of Goshen, Conn.

Two members of the victorious 2004 USA Curtis Cup team, 17-year-olds Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., and Jane Park of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., both moved on to Thursday afternoon's quarterfinals.

Creamer won the first three holes against Grace Woo, 16, of Burbank, Calif., and easily advanced, 5 and 3. It was a turnaround from Creamer's second-round match Wednesday, when she needed 18 holes to advance.

“My overall game was a lot better,” said Creamer. “I was hitting the ball well, and putting well. I left a lot of good shots out there too but when I had to hit a shot, I did it. This afternoon, I'm going to try to do the same thing.”

Her quarterfinal opponent will be 17-year-old Selanee Henderson of Apple Valley, Calif., a 3-and-2 winner over Jennifer Hong, 17, Windermere, Fla.

Park, the 2003 U.S. Women's Amateur runner-up, advanced with a 2-and-1 win over 17-year-old Taylor Leon of Dallas. Park next faces Morgan Pressel, 16, of Boca Raton, a quarterfinalist last year and semifinalist in 2001, who ousted Maria Jose Uribe, 14, of Colombia, 3 and 2. Park and Pressel met in the third round of the 2002 Girls' Junior, with Park taking the victory in 21 holes.

The quarterfinal rounds of the 2004 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship will be played Thursday.  The semifinal matches are on Friday, and the 18-hole championship final is scheduled for Saturday.

The U.S. Girls' Junior is one of 13 national championships for individuals conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
