1949 Marlene Bauer
Miss Marlene Bauer, of Los Angeles, only 15 years of age and 5 feet 3 inches tall, became the first
USGA Girls' Junior Champion by defeating Miss Barbara Bruning,
of Chappaqua, N.Y., 2 up, in the final match. Thirty-three girls
not yet 18 years old entered the competition at the Philadelphia
Country Club.
It was the first national title
won by Miss Bauer, who began playing golf when she was 3 years
old. Miss Bauer scored 73 while defeating Miss Barbara Romack,
Sacramento, Calif., by 3 and 1 in her semi-final match.
