Wuesthoff Leads Suspended Second Round at Brooklawn

Fairfield, Conn. – Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff, 16, of Toms River, N.J. recorded an even-par 71 to finish at 1-under-par 141 before lightning strikes in the area forced a suspension of play in the second round of stroke play at the 2003 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. First round co-leader Michelle Wie, 13, of Honolulu, Hawaii, completed only two holes and was 1-over for the day when play was suspended at 2:53 p.m.

Wuesthoff, who was born in Korea, made three birdies and three bogeys to follow up her 1-under-par 70 from the first round at the 6,303, Par-71

Brooklawn Country Club. Her total of 141 places her as the leader in the clubhouse with half of the field set to finish when play resumes at 7:30 a.m.

on Wednesday. Even though she increased her position over rival Paula

Creamer, who shot 2-over 73 for an even-par 142, Wuesthoff was not happy with her performance.

“I played bad,” said Wuesthoff, who was exempt into the championship after advancing to the second round of match play at the 2002 U.S. Women’s

Amateur Championship. “I don’t know why. My driver wasn’t perfect and my caddie said I was trying too hard.”

Creamer, 16, of Pleasanton, Calif., was the first round co-leader with Michelle Wie after shooting 2-under-par 69, but lost two strokes to par in her second round after costly bogeys at 12 and 17. One stroke behind Wuesthoff, she is assured of advancing to match play but lost out on a chance at medalist

honors.

“The goal coming into the week was to be the top seed,” said Creamer. “But

you can’t win the tournament in the first two days.”

Creamer is one of seven players in the field who qualified for the 2003 U.S. Women’s Open and is looking forward to meeting her first opponent.

“I play so much stroke play,” she said. “But I really like match play. It’s a

totally different mental thing. Just playing the competitor and not the golf

course anymore.”

One of the other players at the top of the first round leaderboard who has yet

to complete play is defending champion In-Bee Park, 15, of Eustis, Fla. Park completed three holes in 1-under-par before play was suspended. Park

recorded a 1-under 70 and was one shot back of Wie and Creamer after the

first round.

Morgan Pressel, 15, of Boca Raton, Fla., was 2-over-par through five holes before her day was cut short. The two-time U.S. Women’s Open contestant

was 1-over after an opening round of 72.

The U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The U.S. Girls’ Junior is open to female amateur golfers who have not reached their 18 th birthday prior to the end of the championship and have a USGA Handicap Index of 18.4 or better.
