Three Tied For Lead After Morning Round At 2002 U.S. Girls’ Junior ChampionshipWestfield, N.J. – Mallory Code, 17, of Tampa, Fla., Taylor Leon, 15, of Dallas, Texas, and Catalina Marin, 16, of Columbia shared the early lead after the morning’s first-round stroke play action at the 54th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at the par-73, 6,353-yard Echo Lake Country Club.
The three players each recorded a 1-over-par 74 to share a one-stroke lead. No one recorded a round at par or below during the first round's morning action.
“The scores are really high because the course is really hard,” Marin said. “If you’re not on your game, you’re in trouble.”
Morgan Pressel, 14, of Boca Raton, Fla., a semifinalist at the 2001 U.S. Girls’ Junior, stands four back after posting a 5-over-par 78.
The U.S. Girls’ Junior is one of 13 championships conducted by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
The U.S. Girls’ Junior is open to female amateur golfers who have reached their 18th birthday before July 27, 2002 and have USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 18.4.
After a second day of stroke play Tuesday, the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship field will be reduced to 64 players for match play. The first and second rounds of match play will be held on Wednesday, July 23. The third and quarterfinal rounds will be played on Thursday, July 24 and the semifinal matches will be played on Friday, July 26. The championship final is scheduled for 9 a.m. EDT on Saturday, July 27.
