After two years of construction under the guidance of architect Donald
Ross and local Professional George Low, Echo Lake Country Club moved
to its current site in Spring of 1913. Modified by Robert White and
Willard Wilkinson, the course attained its current form by 1928; the
Girls' Junior Championship is being played on essentially the same layout
that Paul Runyan and Walter Hagen battled on in the 1934 Metropolitan
Open.
Designed in an era when match play was the game of the day, and prior
to extensive irrigation systems, the course was planned with the ground
game in mind; utilizing approaches as landing areas for many shots was
the key for success in those days of hard and fast conditions. Echo
Lake is normally maintained to mirror these original conditions, and
if the conditions are right the Girls' Junior Championship may be decided
by the ability to adapt to those conditions.
